that fiscal cliff house republicans are now offering up a plan of their own to avert that combination of spending cuts and tax hikes. it's set to welcome us all on january 1st if they don't have an agreement. i'm jenna lee. jon: some kind of welcome that would be. i'm jon scott. within hours of seeing the proposal the white house slammed the g.o.p. offer saying quote their plan provides nothing new and provides no details on what deductions they'll limb nature, loopholes they will close or which medicare savings they would achieve. house speaker john boehner inc insists his offer is the best one on the table calling it a credible plan that deserves serious consideration by the white house. jenna: mike emanuel is with us. certainly a challenge to find this ideal plan. what is holding it up. >> reporter: the chairman of the senate budget committee wants a large come proceed hence i have deal in the range of $5 trillion and says a grand bargain can get done if everybody kaoels cool and doesn't overreact to every valley over the net. he this is a camp david-style summit might help things

house has set out its course here. i think you'll see something a lot different in the fiscal cliff negotiations from the white house than you saw in say the government shut down negotiations a year ago. you are going to see a much more campaigning, much more campaign-like president obama in the next month. jon: you know, some sort of even partial -- neutral observers are saying that the obama campaign won in part because they did a much better job of harnessing the power of social media in this election and driving their voters to the polls. if that succeeded for them in the election, can they do it when it comes to governing? can they make the country, you know, embrace tax increases, for instance. >> yeah it's a huge question. i think there are folks who think that it can work the same way. there are a lot of others who really question whether or not those sorts of tactics, and, you know, the list and voter contacts that ofa built in a campaign context, do they work on capitol hill and governing. there are some doubts there but i don't think there is any doubt that the white hous

ago. he was asked flat out is the white house ready to go over the fiscal cliff and boom he says, absolutely, as if that is a good thing. i mean there are defense contractors who are going to be laying off workers, there are all kinds of negative ramifications to all of this. but the white house apparently is ready to take the jump. >> well, they are certainly ready to say it. the republicans have a weaker hand than i thought they would originally have about a couple months ago, but the idea that president obama wants to start his second term by plunging the country into a recession, a huge sell off in the stock market, and by being perceived as generally sort of willing to play chicken with the economy doesn't sound like a brilliant political move to me. jon: you think that's all talk? >> i think it's a game of chicken, i really do. i think that the republicans would probably get a lot of blame in the beginning, and that's maybe what they are thinking of and they are trying to scare the republicans, but over the long term there is just no way this administration wants to go over
